Felix Adler and the Foundations of Applied Ethics
In 1988, the editors of the Journal of Humanism and Ethical Religion asked Dr. Marcus Singer to evaluate the impact that Felix Adler, the founder of Ethical Culture, had on American philosophy. His answer was that Adler had no impact on American philosophy. But Singer added, if one asked where he should have had impact, the answer is applied ethics. In this presentation, I explain what Adler's position on applied ethics was, and then describe the belated acknowledgment he has received as the founder of applied ethics in the modern sense.
