Shocked into action against an ongoing authoritarian rise:
Is the takeover of New College a Pearl Harbor event?
Presented by Juliana Pare-Blagoev
On January 6, 2023, Governor DeSantis of Florida announced the appointment of six highly ideologically motivated individuals as trustees of the New College of Florida. Far from isolated, this strategy of decapitating the leadership of important social structures and imposing new ideologically guided “leadership“ has been utilized across the state in multiple domains. Combined with far-reaching legislation that creates Orwellian big government in the name of promoting freedom and liberty, the actions in Florida and in other trifecta states around the country have shocked members of the New College community into intense anti-authoritarian action. This talk introduces a small number of the most concerning developments in Florida with a nod towards the way they are echoed in other states around America. It humanizes the impact on the people directly affected and is intended to support those who attend to self-reflect, engage in dialogue, and identify realistic actions they can take.
