EVENT DETAILS:  Inherit the Wind (1960) (suitable for older children)

This movie would be interesting to children and others interested in science and the conflict that can occur between religious ideas and science.

Inherit the Wind covers an iconic moment in American history when a teacher is arrested and put on trial for teaching evolution, the “Scopes Monkey Trial”.  The events in the movie took place in 1925.  In 1960 when the movie was made, many Americans thought that this issue had been largely settled and the controversy about teaching evolution was in the past.  In the decades to follow, Creationism became a religious movement opposed to evolution and it has gained political power.

Knowledge of the “Scopes Monkey Trial” and the controversy of teaching evolution is part of the foundation of American humanist thought.

IMDB includes this summary of the movie:

Based on a real-life case in 1925, two great lawyers argue the case for and against a science teacher accused of the crime of teaching evolution.

Teacher B.T. Cates is arrested for teaching Darwin's theories. Famous lawyer Henry Drummond defends him; fundamentalist politician Matthew Brady prosecutes. This is a very thinly disguised rendition of the 1925 "Scopes monkey trial" with debates between Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan taken largely from the transcripts.

The Zoom link for the movie showing and discussion is included below.

I look forward to showing this movie and the discussion.
