Andrew Orlans will present a talk with three parts

    1. Homage to Christine Stevens’ work with the Animal Welfare Institue and the Society for Animal Protective Legislation

      2.  Barbara Orlans’ animal welfare work under Mrs. Stevens’ mentorship.  The founding of   the Scientists’ Center for Animal Welfare in Bethesda, MD; her subsequent work at the Kennedy Institue for Bioethics at Georgetown University.

       3. Critique of secular humanism for being too human centered; beyond utiltarianism in  animal/human relations; residues of Christian views (“dominion over the animals”) in our secular scientific age with reference to bio-medical research and agri-business.
