The years between his voyage on the HMS Beagle and the publishing of his landmark thesis on evolution by means of natural selection were trying ones for Darwin. He knew the facts of his findings would set off a cultural explosion, and trouble greatly those who clung steadfastly to traditional religious teachings and creation stories.
