By Randy Schwartz
Clare Schwartz of Oakton, VA, passed away on April 23, 2018, at the age of 93. Clare and her husband Hyman, who died in 2005, were active in the Northern Virginia Ethical Society starting in the 1990s. Previously, they were members of the Washington Ethical Society starting in the early 1960s. Their five children— Heidi, Terri, Gary, and twins Ricky and Randy— were all WES
Sunday
School graduates.
Clare and Hy were both originally from the New York area. They married during World War II and lived for six years in Germany and Switzerland, first employed by the U.S. Army and later studying at universities. In 1952 they moved back to the States, living first in Alexandria and then in Arlington. Hy was employed as a civil engineering administrator for the Army Corps of Engineers, while Clare earned a master’s in psychology and worked for 23 years at Arlington County’s Drewry Mental Health Center. She retired there as director of the day treatment program in 1986.
In 1993, Clare and Hy moved to Oakton. In retirement they enjoyed performances at Wolf Trap Farm Park and elsewhere, and liked to try out new restaurants, especially those with international food. Clare kept active in a number of social groups, took Spanish lessons, and cultivated an interest in arts and crafts, especially jewelry making.
Clare's family has scheduled a memorial as follows:
Sunday, May 6 at 1:00 – 3:00 pm
Sherwood Community Center
3740 Old Lee Highway
Fairfax, VA 22030
.
In lieu of flowers, Clare's family suggests that donations be made to the
Shepherd’s Center of Oakton-Vienna
. The Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, all-volunteer organization supporting independent living for mature adults.
