Are vast gaps in wealth and economic resources in America justified?

There is an increasing gap between the richest Americans and the rest of society.  Recent economic policies have increased this gap.  The top 1% has more wealth than the bottom 90%. Is this appropriate?  Is it sustainable?  Should economic policies be changed to address this situation?
