Many costs of hyper-partisanship and disregard for truth are obvious.
One less discussed is the time and mental energy spent on fact checking, debunking myths, and confronting patently unreasonable positions. It leaves less resources for intellectually productive or satisfying discussions and over time it erodes the skills of critical reasoning, through lack of practice in challenging situations.
