The NoVES Adult Enrichment & Civic Action (formerly Adult Education) committee is sponsoring a Candlelight Vigil to provide a collective meditative space for our humanist reflections on current issues of bigotry, racism, xenophobia, and misogyny.
The Vigil will be held on Wednesday evening, August 30, 2017, starting at 8 pm outsidethe Fairfax Regional Public Library at 10360 North St, Fairfax, VA 22030. Please arrive a little early and gather at the semi-covered space to the left of the main entrance to facilitate organization.
Please bring your own candle (white or color) or otherwise borrow one of the several extras which will also be provided (please let us know if you wish to volunteer to bring extra candles or lighters).
Attendees will be offered the opportunity to speak for 2-3 minutes in their own words or borrowing a quote suited for this reflection. If you, family, or friends have had any personal struggles or insights with these issues, feel free to mention them. Recommended quote sources, but not exclusively so, include Maya Angelou, Gandhi, Lincoln, MLK, Einstein, Desmond Tutu, Dorothy Height, Elie Weisel, and others.
We will begin the Vigil by lighting and holding up our candles. We will end with a collective moment of silent meditation (a minute or so). The event is anticipated to last no more than 45 minutes.
The Adult Enrichment & Civic Action Committee would like to take photos of this vigil for the NoVES's website. If anyone has objections to this, please let us know so we will not include you in the photo.
